Kathy Kumagai Shimamura, is a practicing physical therapist in Southern California. She is board certified as a clinical specialist in neurology and orthopaedics, with extensive clinical experience in neurologic and orthopaedic rehabilitation in a variety of settings ranging from acute rehabilitation to outpatient and transitional living centers. She is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists. She completed the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles orthopaedic physical therapy residency in 1996 and has remained involved in the Southern California Kaiser Permanente programs as clinical faculty. For the past decade she has taught continuing education courses on movement analysis, motor learning, and spine and shoulder rehabilitation as part of the curriculum for the Southern California Kaiser Permanente Movement Science Fellowship, Spine Fellowship, and Manual Therapy Fellowship. She is also a certified DNS practitioner and assisting instructor. She is involved in the development of programs focusing on movement-based therapeutic approaches and is a contributing author for the American Physical Therapy Association clinical practice guideline team responsible for establishing the CPG for postconcussion rehabilitation. When she's not working, Kathy enjoys swimming and spending time with her family and friends.
